Toy Model Trains - Basic Training For Future Model Railroaders

Someone who is becoming interested in model trains as a serious hobby may wonder about the difference between toy model trains and model trains. If there is a difference, then what is it?

For those outside the hobby, there really is no difference. Both terms refer to small trains - replicas of the real thing - that are powered by electricity and represent a pleasant leisure-time activity for their owners - children or grownups.

But for those who are involved in the hobby, there is a huge difference.

Toy Model Trains - Basic Training For Future Model Railroaders

Toy model trains are marketed to children. These electric train sets tend to be plain and uncomplicated. The emphasis is on playability instead of precision. They are usually what you find while Christmas shopping. With their low prices, they are a great way to introduce kids to the hobby.

Model trains, by contrast, are for adult enthusiasts who value authenticity, fine workmanship, and attention to detail. Quite often the term "prototyping" is used in discussions about model railroading. Enthusiasts are interested in expanding their models into large, often complex, layouts - complete with accessories made to scale. For some, they are a true art form.

Toy model trains began to appear on the scene in Europe and North America in the 19th century. They were push-toys made of wood or cast iron. They could be wind-up clockwork trains or they could be powered by small steam engines.

Beginning early in the 20th century, the famous American company Lionel did much to popularize electric trains as favored toys for children. Lionel's marketing plan was based on encouraging children to play with their trains instead of merely watching them go round and round the track. The company did this by creating and marketing accessories that were active, e.g., signal lights, coal loaders, logging cars, and more.

Recently, in the mid-1980s, a British TV series named Thomas the Tank Engine and Friends appeared. The series, which was based on a series of children's books from the 1940s, was about an anthropomorphized train and his adventures. The series was successful in piquing the interest of many children in owning their own toy trains.

Model locomotives are made to last for many years. Their wheels are made to maximize contact with the track in order to get a better connection to the electricity. Model locomotives have strong engines, and that means real pulling power. A quality locomotive is made out of metal. The weight of the train has a major effect on how well it works. The heavier the train, the better it will make contact with the track and therefore the better it runs.

The industry also offers working steam engines for the little boys inside the grown men. (The same goes for the many women enthusiasts who started in the hobby as little girls.) To the true model railroader, there's nothing better than seeing these trains with realistic steam filling the miniature landscape of a complex layout.

Many of today's enthusiasts can tell you exactly when they first entered the hobby. For them it was one Christmas morning long ago when that first Lionel or American Flyer train set appeared under the tree.

Weight Training and Muscles, Not Just For Men Anymore!

Weight training and muscles, once reserved for macho men, are becoming more and more prevalent for women in recent years. Just take a look at the magazine rack in your local store, or look closely at the physique of the women on your favorite TV shows, and you'll notice that toned, muscular bodies are the norm for the rich and famous.

These elite women have set a standard for many others who have followed suit and given up their step classes for the weight room. Just walk into any gym and you're likely to see just as many women pumping weight as men, and for very good reason.

Book For Men

What women have begun to learn and understand is that when they build muscle, the extra weight they may be carrying is much easier to shed. Science has shown that indeed, muscle burns much more calories than fat. So, what does that mean for you and me?

Weight Training and Muscles, Not Just For Men Anymore!

Simply put, two women of the same height and weight can have very different physiques based on the amount of lean muscle each has. For example, Claire may be five feet, three inches, one hundred and thirty pounds, and have poor muscle tone. Her friend Sue may be the same height and weight but have strong, defined muscles. It is very likely that Sue will be thinner than Claire. Of course, this is a simple analogy, and many other factors such as body shape, medical conditions, etc. may play into the actual results.

Clearly, it is in the best interest of not only men but also women to work on building healthy muscle tone, and the message is getting out. So, how can this best be achieved?

Obviously, weight training is recommended. This doesn't mean that women need to be bench pressing hundreds of pounds, or putting themselves through workouts that Rocky would be proud of. A good weight training routine can be done at home, with small, simple weights, and there are many books and DVD's that will help with training routines. Today's gyms, for those who prefer to use professional grade equipment, offer weight training circuit sets, along with a wide variety of machines that are designed to build muscle.

Weight training is the first step, but should be combined with proper diet for maximum results. A diet high in protein and low in carbohydrates, fats, and sugars is recommended. Many women have found that fad diets which exclude all carbohydrates, leaving a menu based on meat, eggs, and dairy, are not only unhealthy but unrealistic. So, what's a girl to do?

A very good choice, and one that helps both women and men to lose weight without making drastic changes to their eating habits, is the daily use of meal replacement shakes that are high in protein and low in carbohydrates, fats, and sugars. Most nutritionists agree that a healthy diet consists of five small meals a day, rather than three larger meals. Given this recommendation, it's important to realize that a healthy diet that incorporates so called meal replacement shakes is not a liquid only diet.

When used properly, protein shakes should be consumed twice a day, not as replacements for breakfast, lunch, or dinner but instead, in between breakfast and lunch and again between lunch and dinner. The protein and other nutrients found in the shake will help you to feel more full, which will in turn reduce caloric intake during the other meals. And of course, this is a great way to ensure that your body gets the protein which is necessary for proper muscle development and growth.

So, if you're tired of the way you feel and look, get off the couch, make a few tweaks to your diet, and get into a weight training program. Who knows, your future just may be longer, happier, and healthier for it!

3 Leg Training Exercises For Skiers

As a Personal Trainer for the past decade, I've spent a good amount of time attempting to design the best ski workout for men and women.

Normally, when I'm contacted by someone interested in getting ready to hit the powder, I ask them about their current leg training exercises, core training exercises, flexibility exercise program, and any injuries they may have.

Book For Men

Most of the time, the exercises they are doing are actually increasing their risk of injury.

3 Leg Training Exercises For Skiers

Exercises like wall sits and endless crunches need to be put on the shelf. They may aggravate joint pain (especially in the knees and lower back) and may hinder your ability to recruit and activate the right muscles that will help you ski without aches and pains.

To help you prepare for your next ski trip, I'm including 3 leg training exercises for skiers. I've taken these exercises directly from my Off-Season Ski Program, a fitness e-book download appropriate for men and women of any age.

Get Ready for the Best Ski Workouts

Ski Exercise #1 - Walking Lunges

There's nothing too fancy about this one (we get to those later), but it is an important leg training exercise for recruiting the muscle fibers of the quads, glutes, and hamstrings.

The stronger these 3 muscle groups are, the easier it will be for you to cushion your landings and hold your skiing posture for longer periods of time.

The walking lunge will be performed by taking a large step forward and reaching toward your sneaker.

Take special care that your front knee does not move forward beyond the plane of your toes.

As many of you will have various ranges of motion and mobility, only drop as low as is comfortable for you.

Ski Exercise #2 - Lateral Leaps

The lateral leap exercise helps with strengthening the outside of the hip and forcing you to practice cushioning your landings as you move from side-to-side.

Level 1 will be performed by starting off in a balance position while in a slight crouch while on the outside leg. Take a large step out to the side, shift your weight to that foot, secure your balance and repeat.

In Level 2 you'll leap from side-to-side rather than stepping.

Ski Exercise #3 - Skier (Runner) Stretch

This is a stretch often used by runners, but is part of the secret to being able to enjoy skiing for more than just one full day.

The focus here is on the mobility of your hip. The better movement you have here, the less stress there will be on your lower back and lower back muscles.

Start this stretch from a kneeling position.

Take one big step up bringing your foot outside the hands.

Slide your opposite knee back and then slowly lower your elbow close to your ankle.

How to Use Your Ski Exercises In Your Fitness Program

Remember, if you're not currently engaged in a fitness program, you should consult your physician before starting one. If you're "cleared for takeoff", then you'll want to include these lower body exercises and stretches at least twice per week.

Be sure to start long before your ski trip so that you'll actually be able to enjoy the benefits of your hard work in the gym (or at home).
