The holiness of God - He is not to be taken lightly - or played around with - and He demands obedience - total obedience. This comes up frequently in these chapters. God was going to speak to that people, through Moses, and we see in verse 9 just what position the man of God has - in the eyes of God.
These Hebrew people were to wash their clothes - not an easy thing for them to do considering where they were - but they were to appear in their best before Almighty God. They were to appear before the Living God fresh, clean, attractive.
How they were going to approach God would be a sign of how seriously they were taking their relationship with God. This was not going to be a casual occasion.
Their calling - and our calling in Christ - is to be different - special - attractive - recognising before whom we come in praise and prayer. And, there are these limitations. There are things God does not want us to do. He does not want us to rush into spiritual matters - He puts boundaries - and commands us not to go beyond that. There are times when He wants us for Himself, totally.
Moses has to be told to tell the people time and time again. Repetition is not because there is nothing new to say. Repetition is to ensure that what God wants said has been said adequately - and then the responsibility lies with the people.
Moses communes with God. We never know what will happen when we commune with Almighty God, and particularly, when He calls us and when we do so on behalf of others.
In Chapter 20, we read of these ten words - the Ten Commandments - which Almighty God gives to the people. God wants to control His people, and He wants them to be in control of themselves. We are not set free from sin in order to be free to sin.
And the people of God are not to become a democracy - nobody here among these Hebrews has any democratic rights - and the Church of Jesus Christ is not a democracy. Nor is the church an aristocracy which is government by a few. Nor is the church an autocracy which is government by one man. We are called to be a theocracy, which means we are governed by Almighty God.
The source of the Ten Commandments is in the revelation of God.
Over these past years it has been suggested that Moses was just picking and choosing laws from all over the place and bringing them together in this collection. There is another law book which has very similar laws in it - written by a man called Hammurabi - and there are those who thought Moses just took some from that source, and some from some other document.
No! No! This is the Word of God - this is not the mere ideas of men. Just as the book of Genesis is not a myth - not made up - not just stories - but a record of what happened.
Jesus Christ had no problem referring to or quoting from the books of Genesis and Exodus.
We can trust this Word - no matter how people may regard us as being funny - or old fashioned - or peculiar - or fundamentalist - that only means you believe in the fundamentals of the faith - and who would want to be ashamed of that?

North and South is an adaptation for TV of Elizabeth Gatskell's novel. Throughout 4 episode series the acting is superb and the strong storyline continually provides interest. With a backdrop of industrial unrest the programme easily draws you into the Victorian era and is a powerful expression of the turmoil's and emotions of this period.
There are several very strong characters, one of the most fascinating is the Mill Owner, John Thornton, played by Richard Armitage. Our first impression of him is as a tyrannical mill owner who beats his own workers. As the series progresses slowly his honourable qualities come forward, in particular his expression of seemingly pure love for Margaret Hale (played by Danielle Denby-Ashe) Yet, like many of the other characters, nothing is straightforward. His attitude to the striking workers is to bring in hired Irish hands seeking at all costs to break the heart of the workers. On the one hand he seems to have no empathy for the plight of his own workers, yet in the last episode there is an unexpected reconciliation with a militant union leader (Mr Higgins) these scenes of Mr Armitage eating in the mills makeshift canteen are genuinely heart warming. Especially since the programme doesn't shirk from the harsh realities of Industrial Britain with death and conflict upper most. The most striking feature of John Thompson is the way he deals with rejection from the woman of his heart, Margaret Hale. He had an opportunity to disgrace her but choose a course which revealed his inner concern despite his outer frustration. The ending scene in the railway station is not the same as the book, but still seems a fitting and rewarding end.

Another marvelous character is Mr Thornton's mother played by Sinead Cusack. She openly reveals her hatred for Margaret Hale and also her hopes that her son will not marry her. This could have turned her into a character to dislike, but her straightforwardness and honesty seem redeeming features which leave the viewer ambiguous in their attitude to this hard talking Yorkshire woman.
Review of BBC North and South
There is much solemnity in the programme, and with the subject matter this is understandable. However Mr Thornton's sister Fannie, played by Jo Joyner plays a very good cameo of a slightly vain and irresponsible rich lady. But again her Yorkshire straightforwardness gives her a likeable quality and lightness that is a good contrast to the other characters who seem at times unremittingly grim. All actors should be commended for their grasp of a deep Yorkshire accent which really adds to the atmosphere of the film.
Another character with a complex nature is Mr Higgins. Proud, loyal and honest he is selflessly dedicated to the cause of the union. Mr Higgins epitomises self sacrifice for the greater good. But at the same time Margaret Hale accurately highlights the harshness of the way his union, encouraged by him, treats Boucher. Boucher is a union member who breaks the rule of non-violence and hence the strike and creates the enmity of Mr Higgins. The heartless, if deserved, treatment of silence by the union drives this "one of life's loosers" to suicide. In doing so he leaves 6 children as orphans. However Mr Higgins again shows his good nature when he responds by taking on responsibility for the 6 children left behind. Driven to despair by lack of work he eventually bites his pride and takes the advice of Margaret in seeking help work from Mr Thompson. This leads to a period of cooperation which brings out the best in both men.
The strike is a prominent feature of the film providing a grim setting for the interplay of emotions and relationships which are prominent in the screenplay. The strike is portrayed in a very neutral way. We see the workers passionately calling for an end to years of mistreatment at the same time we see the other side of the argument. Even though the owners of the mill are quite arrogant we can see their point of view. There is no romanticisation of either side. Margaret Hale seems to be one of the few people in the village caught in between, dining with the Thorntons and the other masters she bravely speaks her mind in sticking up for the workers. It is another great scene with Mr Thornton strongly arguing against the Woman he would like to marry.
There are many more good reasons to watch North and South. It is a marvellous understated love story where we see that our first impressions of people can easily be wrong. It is also a strong endorsement of the power of true love which remains through the most testing of circumstances. Like many TV adaptations if you have read the book you may find your enjoyment spoiled by significant changes to the story line. But if you haven't read the book you can just enjoy the very well acted series.

The term church was first used by Christ during the time when he declared that He will build the church as it was written on the book of Matthew 16:18. Definitely, the Apostles who heard it from Christ knew what it means, because they didn't questioned Christ about it.
However, Christians today although used this term (church) have different understanding on what the term Church means. Some said, it is a building used in Christian worship and the others said it is a religion or a group of believers.

Our first question is: What is church? Apostle Paul said that the members of the church or the body are men. 5 so we, being many, are one body in Christ, and individually members of one another. It is the body of Christ in which Apostle Paul, the other Apostles and their brethren are parts of it.
To make it clear, let us ask the bible: Is the body made up of one part? Apostle Paul's answer is clear. The body is not made up of one part but many.14Now the body is not made up of one part but of many. (I Corinthians 12:14, NIV)These parts are joined and knit together by joints.16 from whom the whole body, joined and knit together by what every joint supplies, according to the effective working by which every part does its share, causes growth of the body for the edifying of itself in love. (Ephesians 4:16, NKJV)Thus, a body is an organization of body-parts. And since the church is also a body, in which its members are men, so the church is also an organization of men whose head is Christ.
We should not forget this, that according to the Bible, the church is not a building but an organization.

It is noticeable by how the applicant sits as they wait for their interview time, that they are nervous. They will explore the entire office area with their eyes without leaving their designated seat. It is similar to an investigation process. Just watch the body language of someone being interrogated and see what their body language reveals. Watch for the lack of eye contact. This will reveal if they are being totally honest. Stop Annoying Email NOW
Don't forward an email and leave all the email addresses it has been sent to showing. Why you might ask. There are programs out there that real spammers use to grab email addresses. When you forward (or even reply) with all the addresses showing you just gave spammers the opportunity to get all those email addresses. Imagine if the email went out to 10 people who sent it on to 10 people .....there's my email address and yours vunerable again and again.
Don't send every joke to everybody. Some people seem compelled to send every joke they get to every person in their address book. Don't waste my time only send me what yo uthink I might be interested in. If I miss out on a joke email I'm sure I will live.
Don't forward emails and consider that keeping in touch. I've had friends (notice past tense) that thought keeping in touch was forwarding an email. Nope, it's not. Once in a while send that person a note and see how they are doing.
Stop forwarding the "true good to be true" emails. Disney World and Pepsi will give you money to forward this to all your friends, Microsoft and AOL will send you money, send this to everybody in your address book and you will have good luck,...you get the idea. Spammers love this because these things make their way around the Internet quickly.
Stop sending the fake warning emails. "I'm a police offier and my wife is a nurse and I never thought anything bad would ever happen to our kids......blah, blah, blah, send to all the parents you know" or a "woman stops for gas and a guy jumps in her car blah, blah, blah,...send to all the women you know and all the men you know to send to all the women they know".
Be careful before you hit a "reply all" to an email. I've seen people get fired, lose friends or get in trouble for this one.
Email is a great medium and email marketing is fine. Let's just use it wisely folks.

In individualistic success models, success is not due to the individual’s relationship with his external environment or place in society, but, rather, a matter of individual accomplishment or, in some cases, a measure of his relationship with God. These models had their roots originally in Protestant Calvinism and are the typical ones you will see in “Success” books.

According to Max Weber (1904, 1905), it was John Calvin who introduced the theological doctrines which combined with those of Martin Luther to form a significant new attitude toward work. Calvin was a French theologian whose concept of predestination was revolutionary. Central to Calvinist belief was the Elect, those persons chosen by God to inherit eternal life. All other people were damned and nothing could change that since God was unchanging. While it was impossible to know whether a person was one of the Elect, one could have a sense of it based on his own personal encounters with God. Outwardly, the only evidence was in the person's daily life and deeds, and success in one's worldly endeavors was a sign of possible inclusion as one of the Elect. A person who was indifferent and displayed idleness was most certainly one of the damned, but a person who was active, austere, and hard working gave evidence to himself and to others that he was one of God's chosen ones.
Calvin taught that all men must work, even the rich, because to work was the will of God. It was the duty of men to serve as God's instruments here on earth, to reshape the world in the fashion of the Kingdom of God, and to become a part of the continuing process of His creation. Men were not to lust after wealth, possessions, or easy living, but were to reinvest the profits of their labor into financing further ventures. Earnings were thus to be reinvested repeatedly, ad infinitum, or to the end of time. Using profits to help others rise from a lesser level of subsistence violated God's will since persons could only demonstrate that they were among the Elect through their own labor.
Selection of an occupation and pursuing it to achieve the greatest profit possible was considered by Calvinists to be a religious duty. Not only condoning, but encouraging the pursuit of unlimited profit was a radical departure from the Christian beliefs of the Middle ages. In addition, unlike Luther, Calvin considered it appropriate to seek an occupation that would provide the greatest earnings possible. If that meant abandoning the family trade or profession, the change was not only allowed, but it was considered one’s religious duty.
The norms regarding work which developed out of the Protestant Reformation, based on the combined theological teachings of Luther and Calvin, encouraged work in a chosen occupation with an attitude of service to God, viewed work as a calling and avoided placing greater spiritual dignity on one job than another, approved of working diligently to achieve maximum profits, required reinvestment of profits back into one's business, allowed a person to change from the craft or profession of his father, and associated success in one's work with the likelihood of being one of God's Elect.
“American Dream” Success Model
The present model of business and career motivation, the one most closely associated with the “American Dream” which emphases individual achievement, competition, and domination has been around for at least the last 50 years.
Unlike the Calvinist work ethic that is based, the motivation for moneymaking is no longer saving for the future, but, what Thornstein Veblen, the famous 19th century economist characterized as “conspicuous consumption.” Luxury homes, luxury cars, fancy electronic gadgets, and exotic vacations create the illusion of wealth. The philosophy of the Amway Corporation, now known as Quixtel in the U. S. is a good illustration of the concepts involved. Amway Corporation is a direct selling organization that produces and markets products using a Multilevel Marketing system (or MLM for short).
Multilevel marketing is a form of direct selling in which manufacturers authorize independent contractors to sell their products directly to consumers, bypassing intermediaries and retail stores. Using the garage or a spare bedroom as a warehouse and a home office as a business hub, a distributor makes a profit by buying wholesale from his or her company and selling to customers at retail prices. MLM is also a recruiting business. A distributor is permitted to sign up other individuals to become part of his company’s distribution force--and is paid a commission on the wholesale product purchases made by recruits. Both methods then furnish consumers with new options in acquiring consumer items they desire.
The motivator for work and sole measure of success measured is money and the goods that money can buy:
This is a business, and a main reason people work at any business is to earn money that not only will help them pay their bills, but also meet other goals. Those may be short- or long-term goals, and they could be large (like buying a new house) or small (like saving for a vacation).
A better standard of living is a common motivation and reward for people starting any kind of business. Money - and what it can buy - is the universally recognizable indicator of success that distributors use to motivate and establish credibility for their business.
Another important aspect of this success model is that one has only one self’s to blame for one’s own success for failure. And yet given the low success rate in Amway, "...the data from one investigative report reveal that only 1,000 of over 200,000 distributors ever achieved the rank of Direct Distributor or higher," it is also quite clear that the company does not offer success to anyone who enters the business [Bromley, 1995:151]. How can all these well-meaning people not succeed?
The only ideologically accepted explanation is that these well-meaning people had no commitment to "the dream.”
Amway is a performance-based business that rewards people in direct proportion to their effort. The bigger the financial goal, the more time and effort a distributor will need to put into his or her business. With an Amway business, a distributor can work as much or little as he or she likes. The rewards are based directly on the distributor's accomplishments. (from Amway
The product is irrelevant. It is keeping the dream alive and resisting everything that could possibly rob one of The American Dream that counts. For "the dream" is God’s blessing, the divine will, the American Way, family, morality, and the free-enterprise system. .
Recently, the American success model has been taken a battering. The competition for business markets and jobs is stiff. The faith in business has been eroded by corporate fraud scandals, massive layoffs, and outsourcing. However, at least for now, it remains the predominant success model in today’s America.
New Age Views on Success
New Age philosophy got its name from the belief that we are at the threshold of a New Age. New Agers contend that the world is going through a paradigm shift, a time when accepted ways of thinking and acting change drastically, because of new discoveries.
For example, the invention of writing and of agriculture triggered paradigm shifts that led to a completely new way of living. According to New Agers, we are going through a paradigm shift through new discoveries in physics and psychology.
The judgmental (left)) side of our brain limits our possibilities for creativity. In contrast, the right side of our brain tells us that reality is what we make it. We need to be more creative in order to live up to our possibilities. In fact, some New Agers believe that we are actually gods, possessing mysterious powers that we do not know that have, including the ability to transform reality to conform to our desires.
We have these abilities because there is already an underlying oneness between our beings and the universe. Nuclear physics discovery that matter and energy is the same suggests that everything is made up of the same energy. Hence, we, as energetic beings, interact with the energy of our environment to create our own destinies.
The link between spirituality and money is evident in many New Age “self-help” books that combine techniques for psychological and spiritual well-being with techniques for financial success.8 According to New Age thinking, your spiritual health and financial health are closely related. As a result, the idea that “reality is what you make it” often translates into “your economic reality is what you make it” Being open to new experiences and goes along with taking new risks and investments.
The New Age movement has adapted many of the same tools used by the Eastern and Wicca tradition that we have discussed: crystals, Tarot cards, meditation techniques, astrology, etc. However, they have developed two powerful motivational tools of their own: affirmations and visualizations.
Affirmations are positive statements Simply repeat them to yourself as you go about your daily routine. You don't even have to consciously "listen,” just play it in the background. Your subconscious mind hears and retains the spoken affirmations and thus begins creating a more prosperous mindset. Your mind will especially pick out the personal issues and focus on them. Examples are:

Active, creative visualization is focused daydreaming. You create in your mind's eye a vision, a thought, and that thought has energy. As with dreams, your mind seems to work best with pictures. As such, visualizations, coupled with affirmations, are powerful tools of creation.

The Croatian nightmare. Before leaving this War, it is important to take another trip to old Yugoslavia, where World War I began, you will recall. The place that was making headlines a few years back...and for the same reasons? The extermination of heretics, world control?
In 1941, Yugoslavia is a neutral player in the war efforts of Hitler et al. The country is a blend of cultures and religions. The religions are represented by Roman Catholicism, Orthodoxy, Islam, and Judaism.

One section of Yugoslavia, Croatia, quite Catholic, welcomes the German invasion and, with the Germans, begins to turn on its fellow-countrymen.
The Croatian Nightmare (Scarlet Threads - Part Fifty-Five)
Archbishop Stepinac is Vicar General of the Army in Croatia, an army which begins to slaughter mercilessly all enemies of the faith (as you know from modern headlines, this is called ethnic cleansing). Pigott says that one method was to drive Serbs (the main enemy) inside one of their own Orthodox churches, bolt the doors, and burn the church to the ground.
Muslims, Jews, and gypsies met similar fates.
"At a place called Nevisinje, a Serb family of father, mother, and four children were captured...The mother and children were kept together and starved for a week, and then a savoury dish of roast meat was brought in to them; naturally they ate ravenously enough - and then they were callously informed that they had just eaten some of their husband and father.
There is more. Suffice it to say that even the Germans were appalled at some of the tactics of Catholic Croatians on behalf of Mother Church.
Politically, Croatia has its roots in Hungary, where for eight centuries it was controlled but legally independent.
Then came the Ottoman rule (1526), Turk rule(until 1699) and the Hapsburgs (until 1868).Then it was back to Hungary, and then in 1918 Croatia joined with the Serbs and Slovenes. Later this amalgamation was known as Yugoslavia.
In April of 1941, through the workings of the Vatican at a most opportune time, Croatia took advantage of the situation and declared itself an independent state. It was immediately recognized by Germany and Italy.
Its leader was Ante Pavelic, the head of a fascist terrorist organization called Ustasa. Extreme brutality, violence, and priestly involvement were the trademarks of this group.
In 1945, Croatia was joined with Yugoslavia as a "people's" republic, Communist style, under Tito. From then until 1980 it was relatively stable. Then the vacuum of power created by Tito's death led to the predicament 1990-ers read about daily.
Colliers of September 1943 paints the picture of Pavelic as a guilty war criminal. Indeed he was, and he fled when Naziism and Fascism collapsed. First he ran to Catholic Argentina, then to Catholic Paraguay. From there he went to Catholic Spain. He lived and died a loyal Roman Catholic. And because of this one man, 700,000 men, women and children lost their lives.
Pavelic was aided by Archbishop Stepinac, also accused as a war criminal. On April 28, 1941, Stepinac writes a personal letter asking the Croatian clergy to support and defend Pavelic's Croatia. When, later, Pavelic is running for his life, Stepinac takes charge of the government himself.
The ethnic cleansing syndrome of the 40's in Croatia is made clear by a statement made by Catholic Minister of Justice Zanitch on June 2, 1941. He made it clear that the state of Croatia is for Croats only. No measures would be too severe to clean it of all Orthodox Serbs.
The ways and means: Bury people alive. Concentration camps run by clergy. Terrorist raids. Starvation. Deprivation. Public hangings. Crucifixions...When you shock a Nazi, you're pretty shocking. The Nazis were aghast.
Any sign of shame over these incidents at the time? No. In fact, the resurrection of Croatia is said to be equal to that of Christ. It is heralded as the work of God. The Catholic Croatians, allied to Adolf Hitler, are convinced that since people would not listen to papal encyclicals, they will now listen to other methods, led by Hitler. Sermons will be heard via cannons, machine guns, tanks, and bombers.
Catholic Croatia did not die at the end of World War II. It reappears in terrorist groups all over the world, awaiting its chance to resurface. Which leaves us with a painful but familiar question. What can we expect of Catholic power in the future? Are there Catholic minorities in many lands, waiting their chance to take power?
Is the Catholic Church, in this 20th century, still willing to be coercive, and force itself on the populations it inhabits? Has it learned from its former conquests that people eventually will not be forced?
In partial answer, I offer the words of one of Britain's "all-time greats" of Romanism, Msgr. Ronald Knox,author, Biblical scholar (d. 1957). Knox was especially strong in Roman ways as he had "converted" from Anglicanism. I quote from The Belief of Catholics:
.. You cannot bind over the Catholic Church, as the price of your adhesion to her doctrines, to waive all right of invoking the secular arm in defense of her own principles... The Catholic Church will not be one amongst the philosophies...
This is a partial quote. The full text makes the heart sink, to know that this 20th-century scholar of Rome unabashedly proclaims, Malcolm-X style, that Rome is willing to gain power and keep power by any means necessary. That Rome equates the great saints of the Anabaptist movement with the Communist menaces. That neither parents or educators would be able to keep a Catholic-dominated nation from forcing its children to learn the Catholic ways in the schools of the land. That to be a Catholic is to have normal thinking processes. All other thinking is sub-normal. That all Catholic talk about democracy and liberty is geared only toward the eventual emancipation of Catholicism, after which time all democracy and liberty will cease.
I must sound naive. Of course Rome believes this. The planet is dotted with countries where this very state of affairs exists. Oh believers in Jesus, awaken! Come out of her! Do not share in her program lest you share in her eventual condemnation!
Knox's book was criticized in some quarters, but never banned from Catholic thinking. It stands as a warning to us all.

Very young children can go through a sticky stage around the age of about two to three. These are the years that are jam packed with accelerated development. From birth to age three, your child learns to walk, talk, and toilet train, eat, play and use multiple skills. By the time they reach two or three, their routine should be firmly fixed but some people experience deep trauma when trying to keep their child eating and drinking the right things, and going to bed at the right time.
The formula is very simple - find a routine which suits you and your children and stick with it. Do not allow this routine to be overturned either by you, the children, or indeed by grandparents and friends. Getting a child back on track after disruption is a nightmare, so it is far better to avoid the nightmare, rather than try to fix the damage later.

So many parents struggle with small kids aged two to four, trying to get them to agree to go to bed, sometimes right up to midnight or 1 am when they themselves are preparing for bed. This is a fatal situation to get into and there are ways to avoid the problem.
Coping with Difficult Children at Bedtime
In the first place, small kids take an afternoon nap and this nap can run into a couple of hours. There is a point at which your child no longer physically needs this sleep in the afternoon. Indeed, there is a point at which the continuance of this habit intrudes into night time sleep. That is the point where you have a fractious child unable to feel sleepy enough to go to bed at the right time.
Okay, so you are reading this because you have a monster kid with the energy of two athletic teams at midnight and you are going out of your mind. The men with white jackets are already parked outside! The solution is painful but it works.
No more afternoon sleeping. Forget it, it's not happening any more. That wonderful two hours freedom in the afternoons to do the ironing in peace or watch daytime television is history. Comfort yourself that your evenings are going to improve and be grateful.
Your child may have a dummy or pacifier. Try to distract your child from wanting a pacifier at the usual nap time. Hide it somewhere, or better still take your child to the park or even just for a walk (not in a buggy where they will fall asleep). The object of this exercise is to tire your child. The setback is that it can have the effect of tiring you too but do not worry too much about that, you will get your rest later.
As soon as you return home, your child will want to sleep. This is the bad, bad time when you have a screaming kid who cannot understand why Mummy won't let him/her sleep for a few minutes. Do not cuddle and try to pacify in that way, rather try to amuse for an hour or so. Do whatever you have to do - sing, play, read, colour books, whatever. Stretch this time out, if you can, until tea time or supper time. Do not leave your child watching television while you prepare their meal, as by this time they will be well and truly exhausted. The meal will serve to take your child over the most difficult part of the early evening.
This meal should consist of nourishing food, not three processed desserts just because your child is having a tantrum. Do not substitute food with sweets when your child will not eat. As soon as you do this your child will cease to eat proper food because they know you will relent and give them sweet things. Put up with the tantrums and cut out the sweet stuff until your problems are resolved. Half an hour after supper, put your child into a nice warm bath and make sure you play gentle water games in the bath, not rowdy, screaming fun time please. Do not forfeit bath time or refuse your child playtime in the bath because you are in a hurry - organise yourself better so your child has this important and calming time in the bathroom.
Once bath time is over, put your child into bed and sit with a picture or story book. Do not sit on the sofa watching television; make sure the child is actually in bed. Most children, after rigorous exercise and a warm bath and with a full tummy, will sleep peacefully for many hours. If yours does not, then persevere for a few more days as it is possible your child may still be stressed from having the pacifier withheld, or just be upset by the changes you have made in routine.
It is well worth making the effort to stick to this routine. Your child will eat and sleep better, and enjoy the attention at story time. What is more, you will avoid being sectioned under the Mental Health Act.

However, modern textbooks on writing seem to ignore the fact that the Father of the Modern Essay, Montaigne, clearly talked about the importance of newness in writing his essays, such as when he said that he likes to turn a thing over in an "unfamiliar [new] light." (If unfamiliar doesn't mean new to the reader, what does it mean?)
And in his book Essais which earned him the title of Father of the Modern Essay, Montaigne actually used the old-new pattern as his standard for both format and content, as these two typical examples from his book show:
The most usual [old] way of appeasing... is by submission... and yet [cue for newness] bravery, constancy, and resolution [reverse of submission]... [can be used to achieve] the same effect.
... let us revenge ourselves by railing at [greatness]; and yet [cue for newness]... a man may... refuse it [newness of reversing].
Those two examples are fairly plain in their use of the old-new pattern, don't you think? So it's beyond me how four hundred years PLUS of scholarship missed that constant old-new pattern in Montaigne's Essais!
The same problem exists in Communications, a discipline closely related to writing, since writing is a form of communication.
In World War II, Communications experts came up with a very simplistic model of communications that hasn't changed since then: It's nothing but a sender on the left, a receiver off to the right, and a packet of information in the middle with some vertical squiggly lines around it to represent possible interference to the message, with an arrow from the sender going through the packet and ending at the receiver on the right. As in writing circles, the model captures merely the form of communication, but not the content.
And you can't capture the essence of writing until you deal with the concept of newness---in depth, with a full definition, a breakdown of newness into a few main categories, and a complete process for creating newness---as Montaigne tried to tell us in so many words over 430 years ago.
