The LDS church not only has young men who go out and serve missions but also have young women who leave their families to serve missions too. These young women missionaries are referred to as "sister missionaries" and they serve for 18 months. Essentially, their service is similar to the young men or "elders" in that they preach the gospel and serve the people in the area they are called to serve.
During the 18 months these young women are away from home they miss out on birthdays, holidays and other important celebrations with their family and loved ones.

Like most other people, sisters enjoy getting packages and gifts from home letting them know that their family is thinking of them. Birthdays and holidays are the perfect time to get your sister missionary that special gift. However, because the lifestyle and mission rules of sisters are very restrictive shopping for that perfect gift can be difficult. Below are some simple ideas to help make this process a little easier when buying a gift for your sister missionary:
-Snacks: consider putting together a package with her favorite snacks. Be sure to include healthy snacks as well. She has a missionary companion so remember to send some extra snacks for her to share with her companion.
-Photo Book/Journal: sister missionaries spend 18 months away from home and miss out on family activities and traditions. One idea to help include your sister missionary is to put together a photo book/journal documenting these special times in your family with accounts from each family member sharing their thoughts and feeling of the occasion. Be sure to include pictures as well, pictures are worth a thousand words. This kind of gift will prove to be a favorite and will last forever.
-Fitness: Another thing that would be much appreciated is anything to help with their fitness needs. Sister missionaries are given 30-minutes each morning to exercise. It's difficult to come up with exercises without having the right tools. Small, lightweight and portable fitness equipment such as a jump rope or exercise tubing will give your sister missionary the gift of fitness allowing her to be more healthy and productive as she serves.
Above all else, be creative and thoughtful when selecting a gift for your sister missionary and make sure that it comes from the heart. These gifts will be a welcomed sight for any LDS sister missionary.
